SSI is a means-tested benefit that provide a maximum of $794 (in 2021) of federal cash benefits. Additionally, every New Jersey resident receiving SSI benefits automatically qualified for and receives Medicaid benefits. In order to qualify for SSI benefits, the individual must meet certain medical criteria and financial limits.
The Social Security Administration define “disabled” as being unable to engage in any substantial, gainful activity by reason of any medically determinable physical or mental impairment which can be expected to result in death or which has lasted or can be expected to last for a continuous period of not less than 12 months.
Adult children with disabilities (known as a DAC-Disabled Adult Child) can collect Social Security benefits on his or her parent’s work record upon the death, disability or retirement of the parent. DAC status requires a showing that the disability manifested prior to age 22.
